5 Questions With Olivia Everitt
Grant Writer and Arts Consultant Olivia Everitt shares her experience in starting a business locally (plus some insight on her search for the best local babychino).
What made you start this business locally?
Initially, I started my business in Cairns to freelance with festivals and in youth arts. I still do this kind of work today, but in a strategic ‘behind the scenes’ way – predominantly in grant writing, as opposed to being at the coalface of event delivery.
What’s something people misunderstand about the work you do?
How time-consuming it can be! Grant writing takes time, strategy and refinement. It’s very hard to do a grant application well if you rush the process.
What’s your favourite hidden gem in the area?
I’m on the hunt for Gympie’s best babychino with my 3-year-old daughter, so we test out a new local coffee spot every week! Mama Dee’s, Swing By, Little H, The Two of Us, Soma Soma... all delivering the goods!
What’s the toughest part of running a local business?
Managing cash flow and following up on overdue invoices. If you pay an invoice from a local business early or on time, you’ve made someone’s day!
