5 Questions With Macaila from Sunny Mill
Macaila from Sunny Mill shares her experience in starting a business locally and what she loves most about Gympie.
Why did you start your business?
We started Sunny Mill out of a passion to help more families eat real food. We learned that once the wheat grain is cracked open, it begins oxidising and loses most of its nutrients. Storebought flour is often then heavily sifted to remove the germ and bran (where majority of the nutrients and vitamins live), and bleached, and you’re left buying dead starch. So, we made the switch from storebought flour to our own and noticed such a huge difference in our health. We wanted other families to have access to it, so began selling it. We have now expanded into a range of delicious baked goods, frozen cookie packs, homegrown fermented chilli sauce, and have new products in the works!
Where would we find you in your spare time?
Either in the kitchen experimenting with a new recipe, or outside on our five acres with our three kids, watering, weeding or planting seeds.
Another local business that you love?
We love buying beef from @greenslopes_pastoral, candles from @honeycombglowcandles, eggs from @feather_and_spice, and @thevillagecollectivestore for hidden treasures and organic loose leaf tea and herbs, to name a few.
What’s a hidden gem in the area you think more people should know about?
We’ve been really loving being apart of the @worn.before.waredrobe.market that are on monthly next to @thehatchspecialtycoffee. It’s a beautiful preloved clothing market full of many hidden treasures, and you can grab morning tea from us on your way out.
How would you describe Gympie in three words?
Warm, welcoming community.
